Here’s another one on display at Dayton. I’m not sure where this fits into the Yaesu line-up – it’s not an all-mode all-bander like the FT-857, so presumably it’s not a replacement for that? That said – the FT-991 is far from feature by feature identical to the unit it replaced (the FT-897), so perhaps it is? It certainly has the FT-857 form factor. Bottom unit is the external (optional) ATU:
I’ve been so impressed and happy with the performance of my Yaesu 857D I won’t change it unless something so good comes out it betters it by 110% in it’s features and useability.
Hi Stuart, yep, the 8×7 series of rigs have rightly earned themselves a place in the radio hall of fame. They are, however, 14(ish) years old now. Further reading indicates that the 891 is the replacement for the 857. So, assuming you use your 857 for HF use alone, I think it’s a given that the 891 it will be 110%+ in better than the 857 in both features and usability – however, whether you’d appreciate that difference in a mobile environment is another question altogether…
